ORSA Fuel, Terranite Project

ORSA Fuel, Terranite Project

This is one of two thing I thought of based on MarcSP’s comment: “Longer term, if the goal is reduction of hoarding, and reduction of the mountains of resources, then more drastic
changes will need to be made.”

In Project Terran, everything costs credits, resources, or both. (Usually both.) I think there is a way to make that work here, possibly even granting a small increase in the number of deployed extractors.

Terranite Fuel, collected at the Terranite Project

In short, a “pseudo resource” will be added. It is not one the player ever interacts with directly. Terranite Fuel is the fuel for extractors. Due to financial mismanagement, players will be responsible for fueling their own extractors. (Saint Rexx Shredd protect me, I feel the player pouring glasses of hate-orade as I type this.)

The Terranite Fuel is a stock level in your ORSA account. Ore and some other resources are converted to Terranite. Extractors consume Terranite Fuel every hour.

100 units of Ore will produce 100 units of Terranite. Also, the resources Iron, Copper, Alucite, and Hermiril will produce 110-130 units of Terranite per 100 units. Refined Ore will produce 3000 units of Terranite Fuel per 100 units.

Each hour, an extractor will use an amount of Terranite Fuel equal to the Survey skill required for that resource. This means that Rice or Wheat will be cheap, one could actually extract Ore to make more Fuel and it would not be a waste, meanwhile the Rare ores and many alien resources will require a lot of fuel per hour to extract.

This would actually make large stocks of Ore valuable, as it could be converted into Fuel. Similarly, the extremely common metals could be reduced to fuel, essentially being converted into more valuable material.

So, basic setup.

When you enter an ORSA field, at the “Resource Service” window, there is a button “Enter Resource Service”, which takes you to the resource fields.

That gets scootched to the side a bit, and a new button added, “Enter Terranite Project Fuel Account”.

When you enter the Terranite Project, the screen gives some basic information on the function of the office. The deployed extractor information is displayed in this screen, so the players can see the number of extractors in use. The player also sees their Below that is the Ore Intake service.

The Ore Intake is three pull-down menus and a “Go!” button, in a horizontal row.

The first menu is a list of CSTS locations. The player need not carry all the ore in their ship. It is pulled directly from a settlement by ORSA agents who wear foot covers and usually promise not to steal anything from your DVD collection.

The second menu selects the material. This list is:
Ore (100 to 100)
Copper Ore (100 to 110)
Alucite Ore (100 to 120)
Iron Ore (100 to 130)
Hermiril (100 to 130)
Refined Ore (100 to 3000)

The third is the amount procured:
100
300
500
1000
3000
5000
10000
30000
50000

(Because the conversion is on a per-hundred basis, I think a pull-down with per-defined amounts would work better.)

Then the big shiny “Go!” button, which takes the player to a screen that says “You imported 3000 units of Iron Ore from Starbase 51. Your account has been credited with 390000 units of Terranite Fuel.

In that example, that 390000 fuel would fuel ten extractors pulling Tessarine Gas for less than 8 days.

The maximum cap for your Terranite Fuel reserve through the Project Terranite office would be 10K + your ORSA standing. This would let long-term players dump lots of resources into an account that amasses several million units of fuel that needs to be topped off monthly.

This is a rough idea and the numbers would probably need significant tweaking.

It would act as a sync for very common resources that players tend to stockpile in massive amounts. Also, it would make basic ore more valuable, which would be a real benefit for the new and low level players.

It could also lead to CES items, like a Captain Trinket that increases fuel conversion by +10%.

EDIT: A few quick clarifications:

For those who do not want more resources added, Terranite Fuel is not a resource you ever actually see. You give the base resources to ORSA, and they make the fuel and handle the fueling. You never find or extract or deploy the fuel. You never "see" it.

Extractors pull the fuel from the ORSA account automatically. The player doesn't handle fueling. Fuel is extracted as resources are produced hourly.

The fuel account is global to all fields.

Different extractors could have a fuel modifier. Again, this is a rough outline.
