But is it ore?
I was just comparing my mining totals to the challenge totals. Something did not seem to be adding up. But then I thought just now, not everything I mine is an ore- there are lots of gases, fragments, and resources that are not marked ore. Maybe they don't count toward the challenge totals? If that is the case, should I remove my mining scanners and just pick up raw ore?

Yes and no!
To be more helpful the gasses, fragments and so on don't seem to count however Copper, Iron and many others that look similar do count so I would leave the scanners fitted.
