Congratulations! Being able to compare things and draw your own conclusions is most basic skill needed in order to play CE at least somewhat efficiently. So you are up to a promising start. Next thing you will have to learn is that real world mechanics bear no influence on how things function in CE....

There are some, but very rare ships that have huge shields but little in a way of hull and armour. Though I know of only one such. Using missiles might be cost effective, but it is hard to find it and there are plenty of things out there that are much better using a gun on. Missiles were also useful...
