Random NPC missions

What about detective work? NPC asks player for finding stolen art collection. Stolen 1000 years ago, and missing. But How? First he has to kill Alien on derelict (kind of enemy), search for clues, put clues together, than search for collection on “Europa Freighter, Gallante, Jaster, Sphere”. Easy. So, in details:
  1. Player picks up mission, which tell him Who knows/where are clues (Aliens on derelicts, maybe in one system/galaxy).
  2. Player look for clues (game mechanic - like mission crates).
  3. Each clue reveal one letter of description of second stage. So, at beginning player see only “?”. After two clues two random letters are revealed “?p?l?”, (or any other random). "Eur?ght?lla?her?" after 10 more clues. Player can reveal all letters, or can try to guess right derelict and place (With bit of luck, player can find right target/place combination before even starting first stage, but it is unlikely).
  4. Player fly to destination and finish mission exploring right derelict (game mechanic - like mission crates),
Idea is not limited to derelicts, any game activity can be used, mining, salvage, combat – all can give random clues, or final crates. Even Ashar/Union can be used (player gets clue with each Cache message).

Big Question – is my idea funny enough?
