Recycle Derelicts

Post by Mechwarrior » Tue Aug 29, 2017 12:03 pm

Guys, first time I have put pen to paper for a game idea here. Just wondering if there has ever been thought of players being able to recycle all those decelicts out there. At first I was thinking about the res -ores etc that could be obtained when a ship was broken down.
Then I started to think, ah, so many items are found when searching a derelict, so res and items could be collected. Thennnn I thought, some are old weapons platforms and cruisers, so maybe some weapons could be removed and refurbished - even the armour could be stripped over time.
If a ship was attacked by pirates and looted and then left behind there could even be fuel.

I mean if there are so many out there, and so far there have been for me to find, then why are they not being collected and broken down, not just searched. They are a resource being forgotten.

It could be that a player needs a licence and a special breakers yard for these items. It could also be that one has to buy a very large and very slow crusher (well we have harveters and extracters so I thought that was an ok name) and its only able to recycle one per day etc... not sure but its an idea

To me, this way of playing could be just as large and rewarding as crafting.

Just thoughts and maybe its too big a change for some - but resources are vaulable and not often wasted. leaving the derelicts out there untouched seems such a waste to me.

And how exactly would this differ from "normal"/raid salvaging?

Sure, it might be (theoretically) possible to add a "derelict graveyard" and introduce "recylobots" that work essentially like extractors/harvesters as you suggested, but what exactly would that ADD?
Yes, more options are often good (do I put down extractors, harvesters or factories?), but I think the amount of coding necessary to turn this idea into something unique - i.e. not simply "reskinned harvesters" - would be too big to be worth it, at least for the time being...
With great power comes the great realization that you can have just as much fun simply annoying each other.

Well I suppose players currently scan (drink tea) for the Derelicts then board and do their thing. We could make it similar to Salvaging wrecks in that new tools and new systems were required to scan for any Derelicts and then 'pseudo salvaged'

Might take some thinking / planning but on a 'Captain Activity / profession basis' it might work. As Darak says not worth it for another Structure Point Sink.

More discussion required.

I was actually thinking it would be the toon performing the actions - ie not crafting, not hauling cargo, out there selecting the derelicts he/she wants to laser in and start breaking down. Players can craft ships, so its a known how much res etc goes into a vessel. I am not saying there should be res by the millions. Each player likes different aspects of the game. If I was able, I would spend most of my game hauling in old wrecks breaking them down and being very thankful for any odd items located. They (weapons/schems etc) are in the ships, we find them walking derelicts.... I just like the idea that I can search one and then when i am finished not just blowing it away as I bug out - but hauling it in and clearing the space lanes.

I'd love some source of Settlement Loot, both heavy industry and (former) derelict. Both appear on derelict, and not in large quantities, so it is ok storywise. HOwever, I'm not a fan of word "Salvage" - it has few uses already, I'd prefer other name.

And "Derelict salavge" should be limited somehow. If you think about "from Ship" activity, like regular salavage, you could give one "permit" for one completed Combat/courier/FOM mission - as a Thank you from local govt. Then there should be something like salvage, better with "Option Loot", like new RAID system.

If you think about Toon Activity, it would be naturally limited by amount of Stamina/health. In order to dismantle derelict Player would have to:
1) Board Derelict like ususal
2) Turn Off self destruct device (all derelicts not secured with one has been already dismantled)
3) Find Large Loot
4) Retrieve Loot

Ad 2) On first derelict tile player will see information from "New Derelict Scanner" - either:
- Device is digital, terminal in in engineering - player has to find engineering, find right place and hack terminal.
- Device is oldfashioned, and located in cockpit - player has to find cockpit and use tools.
- living creature lives in this ship, possibly has codes to device. life signs in cargo bay - player has to find cargo bay and win combat.

Success - player can go to step 3. Failure - derelict is like now. You may consider critical failure (derelict explodes, loss of some HP, exit from derelict) and critical success (bonus to next steps)

Ad 3) After disabling device player can scan Ship structure for interesting loot. But, as derelict are old and in poor condition, some equipment is damamged, sometimes you cannot remove item without damaging other stuff. So, for each tile player can "look for large pieces of equipment" (stamina used) - pplayer see five loot windows, and can choose one, two or three, depending on luck, skill, success in previous step, perhaps regular salvage rank/level (test could be done even without disabling device, but with some penalty - working next to live explosives is unnerving).

Ad 4) after all stuff is marked for salvage, or player is out of Oxygen/Stamina/Health, player exit Derelict and chosen items are removed by AI.

Bad Event. While you were searching the derelict for booty Captain Elkhorn began salvage on the vessel....

Surprised by the comments a little, mainly in the direction they were taking. My thoughts were simple, a toon uses a new ship - soley used for grappling onto old derelcits/or lasers to pull old ships alongside. Then the actual operation begins, section by section the ship is broken apart and the metal/armour etc etc is recycled. I wasnt thinking about the toon using stamina points at all. Wasnt even thinking he left his ship. My thoughts were he sits in his command chair and approves the selection of recycle for items... ie, if its too old and well past the currnt levels for use, no need to keep it for sale etc, just recycle it. At the end of the operation, (yes, it could take some time depending on the ship involved) the toons ship could be full of resource and reclaimed items similar to a derelcit walk through.

New ship design
New drones to walk through the ship prior to destruction and remove any items on board the toon wants. (weapons/fuel/cargo/ etc)

And, it could even be given out like a Fom (a new company appears which planets contract with to clear space lanes) or a new full time career choice.

Thats where I was headed.

If I look at this game from Coops perspective I can understand the 'oh my god, the amount of coding req'd!' or 'thats not where we want people headed' or 'thats not what we want' views. I really can, and I would be the first to say - man, your crazy, way too much work to run the game!
(in a very nice way mate)

My earlier post about being able to recycle dead ships with big slow factory ships didnt go anywhere - but it should have.

One or two who replied seemed to feel that the change was too drastic for the game

I was only asking for a new ship (large to store/carry the res removed)
It would be restricted to locating and stripping down dead ships.
Res and items could be located during the operation.
It would be a time consuming operation best suited to be run by a bot.
To receive more res or items the ship would have to be leveled up.

Several players like to find ships and walk through in this game in an effort to locate something

I still feel we need this type of ship for the players who want it.
Oh wait, we do!!! No matter what was said, changes were made and ahhhhh we now have barges to run in asteroids.

So tell me, if you guys can have your type ship..... why cant I have mine? Whats the difference between an asteroid barge and a barge type ship cleaning out/away dead ships?

Sounds perfect for higher level corporation jobs. You would still need to make/purchase the Salvage Barge and then assign it a captain from the corporation. Available at later levels to make it a "long term" project.
