I'm stuck... How do I progress to increase Gal Fed xp?

no worries, this is a big game with lots and lots to learn...

just shoot pirates and other red targets in galfed controlled space.
- you get red targets when you equip a Threat Detector (other detectors give other targets or all)
- check the galaxy map (bottom right second icon) for the controlled space

or shoot certain targets in VP, but i would wait a bit with that ...

Sell loot on GBM (better prices than JOE), and craft your own EBKs
